The Best Time To Hire An Arborist

Arguably the best time to hire an arborist is spring, before leaves grow and of course before the tree undergoes a growth spurt. Why? Because once the tree is pruned or cut down there is much less mess to tidy up afterwards. Also, there is less of the tree to cut down in the first place, so the job is quicker and the arborist will charge you less.

Given that trees are constantly growing, the tree will never be smaller than it is now; So you could argue that in fact, the best time to hire an arborist is now!

Of course, that’s purely from a cost perspective. From an aesthetic perspective, you could say that it’s best to hire an arborist sooner rather than later. This is because triming tree’s back sooner means that the tree can be shaped as it grows, rather than ending up with a small tree with long, lanky branches.

Why You Shouldn’t Hire A DIY Stump Grinder

People often use hiring a DIY stump grinder as a way to reduce the cost of removing trees, but unfortunately hiring a DIY stump grinder usually works out to be more expensive.

Doing DIY at home gives a great feeling of accomplishment and saving money is always a good feeling too, so why not hire a stump grinder and avoid paying an arborist to remove the stumps by doing it yourself?

Hiring a stump grinder is definitely cheaper by the hour than paying an arborist to grind tree stumps. Unfortunately if you hire a stump grinder, it will be a much smaller machine than a professional stump grinder used by an arborist. As it’s a hired out machine, it will not be looked after and the blades will likely be blunt by people not using it correctly.

Because of this, it will typically take 4 times longer to grind stumps yourself, so you will have to pay more to hire the stump grinder from the hire shop. Also, because it’s a smaller machine, it will struggle to deal with large tree stumps and is unlikely to be able to go as deep into the roots of the tree stump. This means that you will probably end up hiring an arborist to grind the stumps anyway or face the risk of the tree growing back.

Finally, because the arborists machine is more powerful than the type hired out by hire shops, the finished job will look much neater, and you will save some money.

How To Hire An Arborist – And How To Spot A Cowboy!

It’s easy to hire arborists, there are lots about… But how do you chose which arborist to hire and avoid the cowboys?

When choosing an arborist you want a good balance of speed, experience and qualifications.

The faster an arborist is, the cheaper the job will be. This is because quotes are based on time of labour as well as cost of materials.

The amount of experience an arborist has will effect not only speed, but also how safely the job is done. Experienced arborists are able to spot the best way to tackle a job and can often do the job in much less time.

Qualificatons are what sets arborists apart from cowboys with a truck and chainsaw. Qualifications are a great way to show you that an arborist knows the correct way to fell trees and will know the risks of felling different types of tree… For example, a qualified arborist will know that when removing a Liquid Amber tree, it must be assessed for risk of it spliting in half. Otherwise part of the tree can fall in the opposite direction – a cowboy might end up crushing your house in this instance.

So how do you spot a cowboy arborist? These are typically a one man band with no deploma in arboriculture. They are often competitively priced with low hourly rates, but can look less favourable when quoting fixed rate prices. Many of them outsource more complex jobs to qualified arborists (such as Ecoarb). They rarely come with good referrals.

The next obvious question is, how do I hire a qualified arborist who is experienced and the fastest in Hamilton? That’s easy, contact Ecoarb 🙂

How To Remove Tree Sap From A Car Using Household Products

If you have a tree growing over a car park, it can sometimes drip sap onto your car. It can be hard to remove tree sap from a car without damaging the paint, but this tip tells you how to remove tree sap from a car using things you can find around your house.

As soon as you find tree sap on your car, obviously the best thing to do is to call an arborist to prune or remove the tree. Of course, by then the damage is already done and you need to remove the tree sap. To remove tree sap from a car without damaging the paint, cover the tree sap in regular household cooking oil. Massage the oil into the tree sap and remove with washing up liquid. You may have to repeat this a number of times to remove all the tree sap.

How Much Does It Cost To Fell A Large Or Small Tree?

To find out how much it costs to fell a tree, you really need to get an on-site quote from an arborist. This is because the cost of felling a tree doesn’t just rely on the size of the tree, but the complexity of climbing it, type of tree (some trees cut faster than others, some fall in odd ways when felled, etc). There may be other factors effecting the cost of felling a tree, such as if there are powerlines or buildings nearby.

Because Ecoarb are the fastest arborists in Hamilton, we get get more done in less time. Consequently, we are often the cheapest arborists in Hamilton!

However, as a very rough guide to the cost of felling a tree, small trees typically cost $200-$1,000 and large trees cost $1,500-$3,000. But don’t let this put you off, what you might think is a complex job might be a lot simpler than you think… Either way, contact Ecoarb to have an arborist give you a free quote, because it’s impossible to say how much it costs to fell a tree without seeing the tree.

Also, there are lots of ways we can help you to reduce the cost of felling your trees, for example, leaving the firewood on-site or if you want to help our arborists clear the grounds after the tree has been felled. Feel free to talk to one of our arborists about how to reduce the cost of tree removal when you call.

Waikato’s Top Tree Climber

Congratulations to Josh Ormsby (Ecoarb’s senior arborist) who has won the 2012 Waikato / Bay of Plenty NZ Arb Tree Climbing Competition! This is the 3rd time that Josh has won this award and is a great reflection of his skill.

Representing Ecoarb, Josh competed in 5 events:

  • A tree rescue, which involves rescuing a dummy from a tree
  • A work climb
  • A rope-assisted foot-lock climb
  • Speed climbing
  • And a throw-line challenge (Hitting targets with rope from the ground)

Of course winning the NZ Arb Tree Climbing Competition isn’t just about speed, it’s also about safety, technique and accuracy.

Having arborists who are able to climb quickly and throw ropes into trees accurately gives Ecoarb a competitive advantage. This means that we can quote lower than other tree care companies in the Waikato because we work faster and can get the same job done in less time with fewer staff. This means that you get more for your money when paying by the hour or get lower quotes if you prefer to pay a fixed rate.
