When choosing an arborist you want a good balance of speed, experience and qualifications.
The faster an arborist is, the cheaper the job will be. This is because quotes are based on time of labour as well as cost of materials.
The amount of experience an arborist has will effect not only speed, but also how safely the job is done. Experienced arborists are able to spot the best way to tackle a job and can often do the job in much less time.
Qualificatons are what sets arborists apart from cowboys with a truck and chainsaw. Qualifications are a great way to show you that an arborist knows the correct way to fell trees and will know the risks of felling different types of tree… For example, a qualified arborist will know that when removing a Liquid Amber tree, it must be assessed for risk of it spliting in half. Otherwise part of the tree can fall in the opposite direction – a cowboy might end up crushing your house in this instance.
So how do you spot a cowboy arborist? These are typically a one man band with no deploma in arboriculture. They are often competitively priced with low hourly rates, but can look less favourable when quoting fixed rate prices. Many of them outsource more complex jobs to qualified arborists (such as Ecoarb). They rarely come with good referrals.
